The Pelican Rapids football team advanced to the Section 8AA semifinals with a 41-19 victory over the Roseau Rams on Tuesday night at the Chauncey Martin Athletic Complex. Quarterback Grady Larson had another huge night as he completed 12-of-19 passes for 228 yards and 4 touchdowns. “This was a nice all-around game for us to kick-off the postseason,” reported head coach Eli Beachy of the Vikings. “The weather conditions were inclement with rain and wind howling all night long. It made it a fun one!”
Larson connected with Treyvon Benson on a 30 yard TD pass and Jimmy Salazar booted the extra-point kick to give the Vikings an early 7-0 lead. Roseau answered with a 75 yard TD run by Jake Borowicz, however, their two-point try failed and the Vikings held a 7-6 lead over the Rams. A 4 yard run by Benson and another Salazar PAT kick put the score at 14-6 in favor of Pelican Rapids after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, Jack Kapenga increased the Vikings lead with a 2 yard TD run and Salazar made it 3-for-3 on extra-point kicks, making it 21-6. Larson and Benson then hooked up on a 33 yard TD pass, but a muffed snap on the PAT try left the score at 27-6. Larson hit Miguel Torres from 30 yards out and Salazar booted the extra-point for a 34-6 halftime advantage.
Larson and Torrres got together on a 29 yard TD pass and Salazar added another PAT kick, increasing the lead to 41-6 after three quarters.
A pair of fourth quarter touchdowns by Jordan Borowicz on a 52 yard run and an 8 yard run, along with a successful PAT kick made the final score 41-19, WCA.
Torres (4 receptions, 75 yards, 2 TD’s), Benson (2 receptions, 63 yards, 2 TD’s), Channing Russman (4 receptions, 48 yards) and Ethan Isaman (2 receptions, 42 yards) led the receiving corps. Jack Kapenga carried the football 12 times for 97 yards and a TD, while Mark Kapenga added 8 carries for 53 yards.
Defensive leaders were Jack Bergquist (5.5 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 2 QB pressures), Russman (9 tackles, 2 tackles for loss), Bricker Haugrud (3.5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1.5 sacks, 2 QB pressures), Austin Kleinschmidt (3.5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 2 QB pressures), Isaman (2 tackles, 1 interception, 2 pass break-ups) and Jack Kapenga (5.5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 pass break-up).
“Defense played great, outside of some bad talking and loss of footing,” noted Coach Beachy. “Our offensive line played very well in the run game and both Kapenga boys ran extremely well. Grady had a really nice game running the offense and made great decisions of when to give the ball to our backs or get it to our perimeter playmakers. Our playmakers were dynamic every time we were able to get it to them. Lastly, props to the PAT exchange unit for going 5-for-6 on a cold, wet, windy night. The group of Levi Hilukka (long snapper), Maclain Hovland (holder) and Jimmy Salazar (kicker) will be huge for us as we travel through the playoffs, gaining those extra points needed to win playoff games.”
