Pelican Rapids jumped out to a 19-0 lead after the first quarter, led 55-6 at the half and finished with a 55-6 victory over Roseau in the quarterfinal round of the Section 8AA football playoffs on Tuesday night. The Vikings will now host Park Rapids Area at 2:00pm Saturday in the semifinals. Top-seeded Barnesville will entertain Frazee in the other 8AA semifinal contest.
Timmy Guler got the scoring started with a 7 yard TD run and Jack Kapenga scored on a 2 yard run for a 12-0 lead. A 47 yard run by Jack Paulson and a Grady Larson PAT kick made the score 19-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Guler started the second quarter with a 38 yard touchdown run and a successful two-point conversion for a 27-0 Pelican Rapids lead. Guler then connected with Luke Sjolie on an 11 yard touchdown pass and hooked up with Treyvon Benson on a 54 yard TD pass to increase the Vikings lead to 39-0. Roseau scored their lone touchdown on a 76 yard halfback-pass from Jordan Borowicz to Levi Dunham with 4:10 left in the half, making the score 39-6. The Vikings closed out the half with a 48 yard TD pass from Guler to Sjolie and a Kapenga 2-point conversion run, and a 2 yard touchdown run by Kapenga, followed by another Kapenga conversion run.
The scoreless second half was played entirely under the mercy rule with the clock running.
Guler completed all 8 of his pass attempts for 209 yards and Benson was the leading receiver with 5 catches for 128 yards. Paulson ran for 94 yards on 3 carries and Kapenga had 58 rushing yards on 7 attempts. Paulson led the defense with an interception and a fumble recovery.
Borowicz had 52 rushing yards on 14 carries to lead the Rams and completed both of his halfback passes for 101 yards and a TD.
