The Pelican Rapids boys’ basketball team had a great season last year, finishing with a 22-6 record and winning the Heart O’ Lakes Conference crown with an 11-1 mark.  They lost Brayden Ecker to graduation and junior point guard Timmy Guler is out for the season with a torn ACL.  The impact of both of those losses will certainly be felt by the Vikings, however, John Gullingsrud, now in his ninth year as head coach, has a great nucleus of experienced players on the roster.

Returning starters are seniors Ian Fahje (Forward), Hunter Williams (Forward) and Tanner Tollerud (Wing).  Other letter winners back are seniors Peyton Blakeway (Guard), Brady Petznick (Forward), Tydan Marich (Wing) and Jayden Ripley (Forward), junior Luke Sjolie (Guard) and sophomore Charlie Larson (Guard).

Also battling for varsity court time are underclassmen Ethan Sjostrom (Jr. Guard) and Treyvon Benson (So. Guard).

“We return a good amount of players from last year’s team who have put in a lot of time in the off season to improve their individual skills,” reported Coach Gullingsrud.  “With some injuries from the fall sports season still hampering a few of our returning players, it will take us some time to build cohesiveness both offensively and defensively as guys adjust to new roles.  This could lead to some inconsistent play early in the season, but we like the potential of this team to continually improve as the season goes on.”

Gullingsrud sees Perham as the HOL favorite with Thief River Falls joining the Yellowjackets as top teams in Section 8AA.

Assistant coaches are Adam Johnson (JV), Derrick Nelson (9th) and Dave Rund (Varsity Assistant).
