The Pelican Rapids wrestling team did not have a senior on their team in 2021, however, they four seniors leading them onto the mats for the 2022 season. Head Coach Cole Witzig got his feet wet as the head man in his first season last year and says, “In my second year as head coach, the guys will know what to expect from me and what I expect from them.”
Seniors are Jed Carlson, Reece Henkes, Oakley Carlson and Carter Johnson. Junior Kaden Holt, sophomores Jack Kapenga and Mark Kapenga, and eighth-graders Danny Salazar and Jackson Peasley all return.
“We are going to be an experienced team with a lot of senior leadership,” added Coach Witzig. “We have a lot of guys around the same weights so we will need to get some spread out to fill a lineup.”
Witzig will be assisted by Aaron Kapenga, Dylan Evenson and Carlos Gutierrez.
West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville is the top Section 6A team, while Perham and Frazee are the teams to beat in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference.
