The Pelican Rapids Vikings defeated the Battle Lake Battlers Tuesday night 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-20).  “The Battlers played tough in each set but just ran out of steam,” said Battle Lake Head Coach Jenny Roisum.  “The Viking played great defense tonight and served very aggressively. The Battlers were able to make a good run in set 3 cutting Pelican’s lead to only three.  The run was just a little too late.”

Kenady Cameron led the Battlers with 8 kills, 10 digs, and 100% serving.  Molly Durbin and Sophie Akerman each added 8 digs while Akerman added 22 assists.  The Battlers host Brandon-Evansville this Thursday.

“We matched up with the Battlers in two tight sets at our home invitational earlier this season,” stated Pelican Rapids Head Coach Heidi Isaman.  “We were excited to see them again.  We started set one a little shaky on serve receive and playing a few balls that were out of bounds, but settled in and started to get our offense going.  Setters Ellie Welch and Anna Roisum did a great job of balancing our offense tonight and using all our hitters well.  This was the most balanced our offense has been to date and it was fun to see all hitters swing aggressively.”

Welch (4 aces, 6 kills, 9 assists, 1.5 block kills), Roisum (10 kills, 13 assists), Morgan Korf (3 aces, 21 digs), Kelsey Isaman (9 kills, 1 ace, 8 digs) and Hazel Haugrud (5 kills, 20 digs) led the Vikings.

“Hazel Haugrud had a solid night in the front row and did a great job defensively, reading their roll shots and short balls,” noted Coach Isaman.  Ellie Welch and Morgan Korf served aggressively all night and had some huge runs for us at the serving line.  Outside hitter Kelsey Isaman and middle hitter Anna Roisum really brought the power tonight and had some monster kills using their blockers to our advantage.  Right side hitters Marie Backstrom and Claudia Gurath played good defense for us and were always ready to swing with power on the offensive end.”
