John Gullingsrud begins his 8th season as Head Coach of the Pelican Rapids boys’ basketball team with some big holes to fill with the graduation of McHale Korf (Concordia football), Logan Fahje, Jayden Rutherford and Liam Sytsma from their 9-9 team of a year ago.  “We graduated some seniors last year who had been the core of our team for the past two or three years, so replacing their scoring and leadership is going to be crucial for us this season,” noted Coach Gullingsrud.

Senior Brayden Ecker (Wing), juniors Tanner Tollerud (Wing) and Hunter Williams (Forward) and sophomore Timmy Guler (Guard) are returning letter winners for the Vikings.  They will also be looking to senior Chase Restad (Guard), juniors Ian Fahje (Forward), Peyton Blakeway (Guard), Brady Petznick (Forward), Jayden Ripley (Forward) and Tydan Matich (Wing), and sophomore Luke Sjolie (Wing) to earn varsity court time.

“We have three players back from last year with extensive varsity experience in Ecker, Tollerud and Williams, and we will be getting Guler back after missing all but two games of last season with an injury, which will definitely help us on the perimeter,” said Gullingsrud.  “We have a good mix of size and skill overall and the work ethic in the off season has been good as this group of guys looks to put their mark on our program moving forward.”

Dave Rund (varsity assistant), Adam Johnson (JV) and Derrick Nelson (9th Grade) will assist Coach Gullingsrud.

Gullingsrud says Perham and DGF will be the top teams in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference, while Perham, DGF and Warroad will be the favorites in Section 8AA.  “The conference and section will be tough as usual, so our goal will be to continually improve as the season progresses so that we can be ready to compete once the section tournament starts,” concluded Gullingsrud.
