The West Central Area Knights are in 5th place at the Boys Class A State Golf Tournament after day 1 after shooting a 350 at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker.  Fertile-Beltrami 321 and Sleepy Eye 321 are in a tie for first, followed closely by Legacy Christian Academy at 323.  North Woods is in 4th at 346, WCA at 350, Benson in 6th at 351, Lanesboro in 7th at 359 and Adrian in 8th at 369.

Knights Coach Kraig Hunter said, "It was a day of tremendous resiliency and character by our boys. We had a really tough start where we got in some bad spots and had several double and triple bogeys.  We were in 8th place early on, but our boys kept battling back and moving up the leader board all day up to 5th place. They are using that positive momentum with excitement for tomorrow."

First day scores for the Knights were Grant Beuckens 82 (tied for 27th), Tate Christenson 87 (48th), Mitch Dewey 88 (51st), Marshall Dewey 93, Peyton Hanson 95 and Sam Hanson 112.

Section 6A medalist Trevor Swonger of Underwood is in seventh place after carding a 77.

“Trevor struggled on the par 5’s today,” reported Underwood Head Coach Chuck Ross.  “I really look for him to clean that up tomorrow.  It should be an interesting day.  Overall, he did pretty well for his first ever state tournament appearance.”

Hillcrest’s Joel Quam is tied with Beuckens for 27th place as he turned in an 82.  Noah Kapenga of Pelican Rapids shot a 90 and sits in 60th place.

In the girls’ competition, Ashby’s Celi Nelson is in 11th place after shooting a 90 on day one.  Audra Ewan of Hillcrest is 13th with a 91 and Ady Tysdal of Ottertail Central is 20th after firing a 93.  Kennedy Schuler of Breckenridge came in with a 101.
