The Breckenridge Cowboys ended the Pelican Rapids high school baseball season with a 3 run rally in the 7th inning on a bases loaded walk-off base hit by Cooper Yaggie, posting a 4-3 win and eliminating the Vikings in the opening round of the Section 6A playoffs.
The Vikings trailed the Cowboys 1-0 before scoring 3 in the 6th on 3 walks, a hit batter, an error and 2 wild pitches. The key at bat in the inning was a 2 out, 12 pitch at bat by Justin Verdorn, fouling off pitch after pitch, before walking. All 3 Pelican runs scored after that. Pelican managed only 2 hits for the game, a double by Timmy Guler and a single by Logan Fahje. Breck took their 1-0 lead in the 3rd, scoring an unearned run off starting pitcher, Weston Funk. Luke Sjolie relieved to start the 6th and took the loss. The Cowboys started their rally when Collin Roberts was hit by the 1st pitch he saw. Jayce Werner followed with a ground ball single in the hole to left. Then Conner Twidwell was safe on a bunt to load the bases. Jacob Vizenor singled to left, scoring 2 and tying the game. Cam Nieto was intentionally walked to load the bases. After a fielder’s choice ground out with the out recorded at the plate, Yaggie, who was also the winning pitcher in the game, delivered a well hit ball to the gap in left scoring the winning run.
“It was a painful way for us to end our season but I don’t feel we gave the game away, as we have done several times this year,” said Pelican Rapids Assistant Coach Steve Babb. “Breck had good at bats in the last inning and deserved the win. The key play in the inning was the bunt by Twidwell. It appeared the bunt came up and hit him, which would have resulted in it being a foul ball, but the umpires saw otherwise. That set up a very undesirable situation with the bases loaded and no outs. There were several highlights for the Vikings, among them were some fine plays made in the infield by Guler, and Funk pitching his best game of the year. We played a clean game for the most part but just couldn’t get our bats going.”
