Pelican Rapids and Frazee split a baseball double header last Thursday, with the Vikings losing the 1st game 7-5 before winning the 2nd game 15-5 in 5 innings.

In the opener, Frazee jumped out to a 7-0 lead with one run in the 2nd, 2 in the 4th and 4 in the 5th, with Brock Barlund’s home run the highlight for Frazee in the 5th.  The Vikings battled back with 2 in the bottom of the 5th when they loaded the bases with no outs on McHale’s Korf’s single, Luke Sjolie’s walk and Carson McNeal reaching when hit by a pitch.  One out later Brock Sjolie singled to score Korf.  Weston Funk followed with a walk, scoring Luke Sjolie.  However, 2 strikeouts by Hornets pitcher Barlund ended the threat.  Pelican came back with one more in the 6th on a double to deep left center by McNeal, scoring Luke Sjolie, who had reached with 2 outs when hit by a pitch.  A 7th inning rally came up short.  Weston Funk led off with a walk.  2 outs later Alex Lynnes was hit by a pitch.  Both runners moved up on a passed ball.  Korf then continued his hot hitting with a single scoring both.  Luke Sjolie walked and he and Korf advanced on another passed ball, putting the tying run in scoring position.  However, the rally fell short when #3 hitter McNeal was retired.  Brock Sjolie started on the mound for the Vikings and deserved a better fate.  He gave up 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 6 but only 3 of the 7 runs he gave up were earned.  Funk relieved in the 5th and didn’t allow a run the rest of the way, giving up one hit, walking no one and striking out 5.

The Pelican bats came alive in the 2nd game, scoring 15 runs on 12 hits, winning by the 10 run rule after 5 innings.  After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Vikings responded with 3 in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd, 6 in the 4th and 5 in the 5th to put the game away.   8 of the starters collected hits with Austin Stoll collecting 3, including a double and driving in 3.  McHale Korf, Carson McNeal and Logan Fahje all had 2 hits including doubles by Korf and Fahje.  Both of McNeal’s hits were doubles.  Peyton Blakeway, Weston Funk and Cody Nord picked up the other Vikings hits, with Nord having 2 RBI.  Funk for the day reached base in 7 of his 8 plate appearances.  Luke Sjolie went the distance on the mound picking up his 3rd win of the season, striking out 7, walking no one, giving up 5 hits.   Only one of the 5 runs scored on him was earned.  The freshman extended his streak of not walking a batter to 12 innings.

“We played a lot more aggressively on the bases in the 2nd game,” said Pelican Rapids Assistant Coach Steve Babb.  “The pitching has been good so far and the bats are really coming around but we still need to clean some things up defensively.  There were a lot of positives on the day as we were within one base hit of sweeping both games.”

The Vikings return to action with non-conference games Monday in Staples and at Brandon/Evansville on Friday.
