The 2019-2020 season saw the Pelican Rapids Boys’ Basketball Team finish with a record of 19-9 overall.  Guard McHale Korf surpassed 1,000 career points during the year.  The optimism is high going into 2020-2021 as the Vikings return three All-Conference performers and a solid nucleus of athletes with extensive varsity playing time.

Seniors McHale Korf (3-time All-Conference Guard), Logan Fahje (All-Conference Forward), Jayden Rutherford (All-Conference Guard), Liam Sytsma (Center), Justin VerDorn Guard) and Weston Funk (Forward) all return, along with sophomores Hunter Williams (Forward) and Tanner Tollerud (Forward), and freshman Timmy Guler (Guard).

“We have a lot of experience coming back from last season as we return four starters and nine players that earned a varsity letter,” acknowledged Head Coach John Gullingsrud, now in his seventh season directing the Vikings.  “We will be led by our three returning All-Conference players who all averaged double figures in scoring last season.  All three are talented offensive players and we will rely on them to carry the load for us in their senior season.  McHale really makes us go on offense, not only with his scoring, but also with his passing as he sees the floor tremendously well.  Our fourth returning starter is Liam Sytsma, who will be relied upon to anchor us in the paint defensively and rebounding.  We have plenty of options to go along with these four and it will be fun to watch the competition in practice to see who is willing to step up and earn some varsity playing time.”

Junior Brayden Ecker (Forward) and sophomores Ian Fahje (Forward) and Peyton Blakeway (Guard) will also be competing for varsity playing time.

“As with all teams, staying healthy will be a key to the season,” added Gullingsrud.  “The conference and section will be very competitive this year and for us to be in the mix of both, we will need to be significantly better defensively.”

Gullingsrud points to Perham as the Heart O’ Lakes Conference favorite, with the Yellowjackets being joined by Fergus Falls and East Grand Forks at the top of Section 8AA.

Adam Johnson, Derrick Nelson and Andy Johnson will serve as assistant coaches.
